A Darlington man has been charged by police after a woman and baby were injured after an incident in a street earlier this week.
32-year-old Benjamin Mills of Fenby Avenue in Darlington has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and causing grievous bodily harm with intent following the incident on Wednesday (August 21).
Police and the ambulance service attended Grainger Road, near Darlington Train Station, at about 10pm immediately following reports of a domestic incident.
Both woman and baby were taken to hospital. The woman has since been discharged, but the baby remains in hospital, in stable condition.
Mr Mills has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Peterlee Magistrates Court this morning (August 23).
One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described how the incident began just as they were going to bed.
They said: "Last night I heard a little bit of noise outside. I was just getting to bed when I heard a car door slam and then there was some swearing.
"The police came quite quickly after that. I didn't look out because I didn't want to get involved. It's just awful hearing what has happened."
Another resident described hearing a number of police cars arriving and seeing blue lights flashing outside.
They said: "I was just heading to bed when I heard all of the police cars arriving. There were blue lights everywhere. I was very surprised to see the police still here this morning."
A spokesperson for Durham Police previously said: "Officers were called shortly after 9.40pm yesterday (August 21) following reports of an ongoing domestic incident at a house in Grainger Street, in Darlington.
"A man is believed to have assaulted a woman and injured a baby during the incident, who were taken to hospital for treatment.
"The baby remains in hospital in a stable condition, and the woman has been discharged.
"A 32-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken into police custody, where he remains today."
