A Darlington pub has closed for the second time in two years, less than six months after it reopened.

The Three Crowns in Darlington said rising costs and a lack of punters had forced it to close.

The pub first closed in June 2023 after being put up for sale by then-owners Admiral Taverns who believed it had no “long term, sustainable future”.

Ten months later it reopened on March 7 having been snapped up by new owner Lewis Metcalfe.

But less than six months since it resumed pulling pints the boozer has announced it will close over the Bank Holiday weekend.

In a statement on social media the pub said: “This isn’t a post we ever wanted to be writing but we have to announce the closure of the pub with the last day of trading being this Sunday, August 25.

“We will be open for the rest of the week to give you all the best bank holiday weekend ever but unfortunately due to lack of footfall and rising costs we just can’t continue any longer.

“We would like to thank you all for your custom over the short space of time we have been re-open but unfortunately the days of this place being a pub have come to an end.

“Make sure you call in for one last pint this weekend, game of darts, pool, and not forgetting our live artist on Sunday.

“Massive thank you for all your support since we reopened and those who used us week in, week out.”

Speaking to the Echo in March Mr Metcalfe said locals seemed “chuffed” the pub was back open, as he outlined plans to give it a “community feel” with a quiz night, bingo, darts and pool table.
