Fairytale characters came to life to delight children - and children at heart - in a North East town centre today (Thursday, August 22).

Darlington Market Square was transformed into a fantasy world as youngsters enjoyed a Fairytales and Legends Day across several venues.

The event, organised by Darlington Borough Council, featured live stage performances from Barbie and friends and Frozen princesses Anna and Elsa which delighted the young onlookers and their families.

Other famous faces were also out and about, all of them eager to meet their fans - many of whom had dressed up as their on-screen heroes.

A wide range of exciting activities were provided for children and their parents across the town.

Teepees parties and crafts organised by local crafting company Crooked Halo took place in the Market Square Marquee - where visitors also had the chance to meet Tinker Bell and Peter Pan.

Cinderella and her Prince Charming set up camp outside Blackwellgate, with Alice and the Mad Hatter hosting their tea party in the indoor market alongside Yvonne Preston’s crafts.

For the bookworms among us, Frazer’s Fables were at the library for a storytelling session, an event run by North East-based children’s author and illustrator RJ Frazer.
