Residents have described how "awful" it is to hear of the incident last night in Darlington that left a baby in hospital.

A man has been arrested after it was reported a woman and baby were attacked on Grainger Street.

Police and the ambulance service swarmed the scene, near Darlington Train Station, at about 10pm last night.

Both woman and baby were taken to hospital. The woman has since been discharged, but the baby remains in hospital, in stable condition.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described how the incident began just as they were going to bed.

They said: "Last night I heard a little bit of noise outside.

"I was just getting to bed when I heard a car door slam and then there was some swearing.

"The police came quite quickly after that.

"I didn't look out because I didn't want to get involved.

"It's just awful hearing what has happened."

Another resident described hearing a number of police cars arriving and seeing blue lights flashing outside.

They said: "I was just heading to bed when I heard all of the police cars arriving.

"There were blue lights everywhere.

"I was very surprised to see the police still here this morning."

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: "Officers were called shortly after 9.40pm yesterday (August 21) following reports of an ongoing domestic incident at a house in Grainger Street, in Darlington.
