Today along with thousands of other pupils across the country, George, a student from River Tyne Academy, collected his GCSEs after turning himself around.

Despite being excluded from mainstream education in Year 9, George worked hard to gain some amazing results this year - leaving the River Tyne Academy in Gateshead with nine qualifications.

George attained a grade 5 in GCSE maths, 4 in GCSE science and level 2 in both sport and Fitness and Hospitality and Catering.

George’s mum was extremely proud of his results, saying she "could not have asked for a better school to support him" as "the staff at River Tyne managed to bring the best out of him."

The Headteacher Rebecca Matthews said: "George has worked hard to turn himself around and should be very proud of his achievements, he has worked really hard and his determination has paid off.

"I am extremely proud of the work we do and the results the learners achieve and our track record of 100 percent of our leavers moving into positive destinations at post 16 is testament to the work of our young people, families, external partners and an amazing team."
