Students across Darlington, County Durham and the rest of the North East and North Yorkshire have been celebrating today after getting their GCSE results.

Schools have spoken of their collective pride at their students' achievements, while individual stories of triumph against adversity and brilliant performances have been highlighted.

The North-South divide for exam results has narrowed for the first time in a decade as the number of North East students cinching top grades in their GCSE exams has increased.

However, the gap has only fallen by 0.1 per cent and watchdogs have suggested that results show the Covid-19 pandemic and cost-of-living crisis are still having a "disproportionate impact" on North East students.

Chris Zarraga, Director of Schools North East, said: "Congratulations to all students receiving their results today. These outstanding results have been achieved despite the enormous disruption students have faced over several academic years, especially in the North East.

"The significant increases in top grades since 2019 highlight the amazing support North East schools have given their students, in what continues to be a very challenging educational landscape.

Among the man7 high achievers were Myah Wilson, 16, who achieved a bumper set of GCSE results and is set to move to London to pursue her acting dreams.

Myah of Durham High School, discovered she’d gained nine GCSEs, including an 8 grade in her Drama, which means she can pursue her ambition to work in performance arts.

Originally from Sunderland, Myah will head to London in September to take her place at ArtsEd, an independent performing arts school in Chiswick, West London.

The 16-year-old regional pole vaulting champion Martha Hewitt Chapple has been left delighted after picking up a fantastic set of GCSE results.

Martha is celebrating a remarkable set of GCSE results in grades 9-7 from Dame Allan’s Girls’ School in Newcastle.

The 16-year-old, from Birtley, balanced her studies with her passion for pole vaulting, training at least four hours a week and taking part in regional and national competitions throughout Year 11 whilst training.
