Classic cars are set to fill the streets and bridges of Durham this bank holiday weekend, with the county set to host two classic car shows.

Visitors will be able to see classic cars from all eras and marques, with a show on Sunday (August 25) at Ushaw's historic house and gardens, and another show across Durham City on Monday (August 26).

From 10am to 4pm, classic and retro vehicles take over the stunning estate of Ushaw, promising a day filled with family fun. There will be live music, street food, and an onsite bar.

Event entry is free to those with an annual membership or a day pass to the historic house.

On bank holiday Monday, more than 150 classic cars will drive into the heart of Durham for yet another annual Durham City Classic Car Show.

Palace Green, the Market Place, Millennium Place, Framwellgate Bridge and Elvet Bridge all being used to display the vehicles.

The event is free to attend and open from 11am and 4pm.

Malcolm Vance, who organises the event together with Durham Markets Company, said: “We’ve a great variety of cars registered to join the event this year, including MG, BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes car clubs, each of which will have a selection of models from post-war to the current day.

“Each year there are a few quite rare cars - this year we have a 1973 Citroen SM with a Maserati 2.7 V6 engine.

"This model was the fastest front wheel drive car in the world, with a top speed of 177mph, and the car joining us on Monday is one of only 24 left with an MOT in the UK.  We’ll also have a few 1950s Ford Populars converted to hot rods, as well as other interesting American cars.

“Durham Classic Car Show is a really lovely Bank Holiday event.

"Obviously for anyone who knows and loves cars, there’s plenty to see and plenty of opportunity to chat with the owners.

"For families looking for an interesting day out, where better than Durham.  Enjoy the displays of cars, and make the most of the city too.”

The event is co-organised by Durham Markets Company.  Alongside the cars on display, there will be a small Outdoor Market in Durham Market Place and the Market Hall will be open between 11am and 4pm.
