One person has been hospitalised following a crash on a rural County Durham road which was closed whilst emergency services attended the scene.

Laurel Road in Chilton, Ferryhill was closed just after 10am this morning following a one-vehicle crash.

Police closed the road for a period of time whilst the ambulance service attended the scene and took one person to hospital.

A van was recovered and the road has since re-opened.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call at 10.14am this morning to reports of a road traffic incident on Laurel Road in Chilton, Ferryhill.

"We dispatched two ambulance crews and a specialist paramedic, and transported one patient to the Darlington Memorial Hospital for further treatment."

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson added: "We were called to reports of a one vehicle collision on Laurel Road, in Chilton, at about 10.40am, this morning (Tuesday, August 20).

"The road was closed while emergency services attended the scene, and the van was recovered."
