Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke said: "We can all take inspiration from the wealth of service Jeanette provided, and the immensely positive impact she had, touching the lives of so many.

"A truly dedicated public servant, loved and admired by those who knew her, she will be fondly remembered."

Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, paid tribute to the “dedication, warmth and empathy” of the councillor.

He said: “Today we mourn the passing of our dear friend and councillor for Hemlington, Cllr Jeanette Walker. Jeanette served our community for almost two decades with a genuine devotion and joy. Everybody who met Jeanette felt her dedication, warmth and empathy; she was passionate about Hemlington, and Hemlington was proud and passionate about her.

“Jeanette refused to let long-term illness hold her back from delivering for our people. Working with her long-term colleague and friend Cllr Nicky Walker, Jeanette championed countless community organisations – including Women’s Linx, Hemlington Families Together and the Community Council.

“I extend my deepest sympathies to Jeanette’s loving family and friends, to Nicky, and to all those that shared in the joy of having Jeanette working at the heart of our community.”

Middlesbrough's MP Andy McDonald said he was “terribly saddened” by the loss of a “wonderful friend and colleague.”

He said: “I send my heartfelt condolences to her family and dear friends.

"Not only was she a most wonderful and kind person, she was also one of the very best councillors Middlesbrough has ever had."
