A smoker has been ordered to pay a fine and costs of more than £400 after being caught flicking a cigarette outside Durham Bus Station.
Johnathon Hamilton, of Broomside Lane, Belmont, Durham, was issued a £220 fine for littering on February 9, 2024.
The incident took place in Durham City, outside the local bus station on North Road, an area covered by section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
Hamilton breached sections 87(1) and (5) of the act, leading to his appearance before a Single Justices Procedure hearing at Peterlee Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, August 13.
In addition to the initial fine, Hamilton was also instructed to pay a surcharge of £88 to fund victim services, as well as £130 in costs, totaling a fee of £438.

The court ordered a collection for the full amount, which has to be paid by September 10, 2024.
The case was found proved under the Single Justice Procedure.
