A teenage boy was taken to hospital with two broken legs and ankles after an electric bike crashed with a car - as his pillion passenger fled the scene with the bike.  

Emergency services were alerted after the collision in Grassington Avenue, Middlesbrough, at 5.35pm on Friday. 

The 16-year-old who was riding the bike was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital - but his pillion passenger had fled on the bike.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "A 16-year-old boy was left with two broken legs following a collision on Grassington Road in Middlesbrough yesterday.

"At 5:35pm on the evening of Friday 16th August, an electric bike riding on the footpath collided with a red Toyota Yaris as the driver pulled onto a driveway.

"The teenager riding the electric bike sustained breaks to both of his legs and ankles whilst a second boy, who was a pillion passenger, fled the scene on the bike.

"The 38-year-old woman driving the Yaris was not injured."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic collision yesterday (16 August) at 17:23 on Grassington Road, Middlesbrough.

"We dispatched three ambulance crews and one clinical team leader to the incident. One patient was taken to James Cook University Hospital."

Officers are appealing for witnesses to the incident, in particular the passengers and driver of a bus, which was in the road at the time.

Those who witnessed the incident or the e-bike prior to the collision, and anyone with CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage, are asked to call 101 quoting reference SE24157850.
