A family have paid a heartfelt tribute to a man who died following an alleged assault last month.

Christopher Henderson, 55, was found at an address in the Regent Court area of Bensham, Gateshead by emergency workers on July 16.

Police had received a report of a disturbance at the address just before 8pm, and Mr Henderson was found with “serious head injuries believed to have been caused by an assault” after emergency services arrived.

He was taken to hospital where he remained in a critical condition before passing away on July 29.

Mr Henderson's next of kin are being supported by specially-trained officers, while the community is asked to respect their privacy.

His family members have paid tribute to him, describing Mr Henderson as their “shining light, amazing partner, dad and protective big brother and uncle”.

They said: “We really can’t believe we will never see or hear from him again. Words cannot describe how we feel as a family of the sad and tragic passing.

“Our hearts are truly broken into a million pieces. He was an amazing man inside and out.

“He always expressed his love for his family – and it is heartbreaking for his children he has left behind.”

“He was our shining light growing up and being the oldest brother, he was very protective of us all.

“We are devastated by his tragic death. But we have memories that cannot be taken away and he will live on in our hearts forever.”

A full investigation was launched into the circumstances of his death and 42-year-old Ian Black, of Havelock Terrace in Gateshead, was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

A police spokesperson said: “He appeared before Newcastle Crown Court on July 18 and was remanded in custody.

“Black was back before the same court yesterday (Thursday) after the charge against him was upgraded to murder.

“Following the hearing, Black was remanded in custody. He is due to appear before court next year.”
