Go-karters are set to be immersed in a real-life video game as a “groundbreaking” new indoor attraction opens in Gateshead.

BattleKart - a “thrilling” fusion of indoor electric go-karting, real-life video gaming, and augmented reality - is set to open opposite the Metrocentre this autumn.

Using state-of-the-art projectors, drivers will be able to channel their inner Mario and Luigi as they navigate dynamic courses, launch rockets to slow opponents down, and even cause carnage with oil spills. BattleColour at another BattleKart siteBattleColour at another BattleKart site (Image: BATTLEKART)

The attraction - which will be located at Unit 4 Riverside Metro, on Delta Bank Road - will be BattleKart’s first expansion into the north of the UK.

The established chain has sites far and wide across the globe, with 37 locations in the likes of Kent, near London, Dubai, and Melbourne in Australia.

Described as a “real-life video game adventure”, BattleKart features six different game modes.

BattleRace sees drivers test their speed and strategy, BattleFoot allows people to play life-sized football from the seat of their go-kart, and with BattleSnake, people can relive the nostalgia of the classic Snake game.

There’s also BattleColour, BattlePool and BattleVirus to choose from, with the choice to play with your mates in a team or head-to-head.

Construction is now underway on the site, which will be open seven days a week and feature a bar, cafe, and viewing gallery.

The attraction will be open to all ages, but there is a minimum height requirement of 1.45m in order to be able to drive the karts.
