An investigation has been launched after a crane set alight at a North East port.

Firefighters were called to an incident at Teesport, on Tees Dock Road in Middlesbrough, at around 12.35pm on Wednesday after reports of a blaze. 

Pictures online show one fire engine and several police vehicles parked at the scene - with the incident believed to have taken place near Teesport Container Terminal One. 

Cleveland Fire Brigade has confirmed that two engines from Redcar and Grangetown were sent to the scene - and remained there until 1.46pm. 

The transformer room of the crane suffered 50 per cent fire damage following the blaze, as well as 100 per cent smoke damage. 

It is not currently known whether anyone was in the room at the time of the incident. 

A fire service spokesperson said: "Cleveland Fire Brigade were called on Wednesday, August 14, at 12.35pm to an incident on Tees Dock Road, Middlesbrough.

A PD Ports spokesperson said: ""We can confirm that there was a small crane fire at Teesport Container Terminal 1 this afternoon, Wednesday 14th August.

"Cleveland Fire Brigade attended and the fire is now out. There have been no injuries. A full investigation will now take place."
