Drivers have been warned of three-mile-long queues on the A19 in North Yorkshire after roadworks, set to be in place until October, have begun.
Contractors have started the roadwork scheme at each of the central reservation gaps located along the A19 between Knayton and Ellerbeck, near Thirsk.
The work involves alterations to each of the central reservation gaps and some minor junctions along the A-road.
Starting on Sunday (August 11), drivers have now been warned of three-mile tailbacks after long delays expected on both northbound and southbound at the section of the A19.
On Monday (August 12), big queues on the A19 between Yarm and Ripon were seen as drivers were reduced to one lane and a 50mph.
In signs at the side of the roadworks, contractors have warned that 'delays are likely' and motorists should take extra time.
The work involves alterations to each of the central reservation gaps and some minor junctions along the A-road.
This will include roadworks to the vehicle restraint systems, signage and road markings.

Four of the existing central reservation gaps will be closed permanently.
The work will undertaken in six phases to reduce the impact on customers and are currently planned as follows:
Phase one
- Northern Section (approx. between Marigold Lay-By and Lay-By North of Harbrough Farm)
- Lane 2 closures Northbound and Southbound - 11 August to 7 September (24hrs per day)
Phase two
- Southern Section (approx. between Woundales Farm and Marigold Lay-By)
- Lane 2 closures Northbound and Southbound - 8 September to 5 October (24 hrs per day)
- During phases one and two the Central Reserve Gaps within the lane closures will be closed to traffic and drivers will be directed to follow signed diversion routes to u-turn at Knayton and Osmotherly junctions.
Phase three
- Southern Section (approx. between Woundales Farm and Marigold Lay-By)
- Lane 1 closures Northbound and Southbound - 6 October to 19 October (24 hrs per day)
Phase four
- Northern Section (approx. between Marigold Lay-By and Lay-By North of Harbrough Farm)
- Lane 1 closures Northbound and Southbound - 20 October to 27 October (24hrs per day)
Phase five
- A19 Northbound Carriageway between South Kilvington and Osmotherly
- Overnight full road closure with signed diversion route – 28 October (one night only)
Phase six
- A19 Southbound Carriageway between Osmotherly and South Kilvington
- Overnight full road closures with signed diversion route – 1 November (one night only)
