Year Six pupils at a North East school have been filling scrapbooks with ideas for projects as part of a new arts award.

The students at Yarm Prep School have successfully completed their Explore Arts Award, the first cohort to achieve the award since the school's official recognition as an Arts Award centre earlier this year.

The Arts Award, established in 2005 and managed by Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England, is a suite of arts-based qualifications designed to inspire and support young people up to the age of 25.

Seventeen young creatives embarked on their 'Explore' award, learning new methods of working and trying out a variety of media such as ceramics, wet felting and gel printing.

They met artist Lucy Storrs to learn about how she creates her stunning felt artwork and talk to her about her life as an artist and the meaning behind her pieces.

The children’s felt landscapes are a favourite among the art created for the award, along with stunning ceramic tiles inspired by the world around us.

Building a foundation in various art forms, the programme encourages pupils to take on creative challenges and develop new skills, ultimately preparing them for future education and career opportunities in the arts and beyond.

Yarm Prep School has recently been announced as the Tes Schools Independent Prep School of the Year. This prestigious accolade commended the school’s dedication to its core values and the Arts Award Centre status also aligns with these, further fostering pupil creative talent and ambition.
