A County Durham man took his own life shortly after the breakdown of his relationship.

Luke Broomfield, 30, was found by his cousin having attempted suicide at his home in Spennymoor on May 19 this year.

Paramedics managed to resuscitate him and he was kept alive in hospital, but tragically died four days later, an inquest at Crook Coroners Court on Monday (August 12) heard.

In a statement read to the court from his cousin Danielle Broomfield she said she went to his house after receiving a call from his ex-partner expressing concerns about him.

She said: “They had recently separated, and he was struggling with the (relationship) breakdown.

“I spoke on the phone, and he said he was okay, nothing appeared to be out of the ordinary.”

Later Danielle received another call, and she went around to his home to check on him, but discovered he had attempted suicide, the court heard.

Paramedics were called and CPR started, and he was taken to intensive care at University Hospital North Durham.

He died four days later on May 23, shortly after being taken off a breathing machine.

The inquest heard he had left two notes, one to his parents and one to his ex-partner.

Recording a conclusion of suicide, Assistant Coroner Leslie Hamilton said: “I don’t think there’s any doubt here that Luke intended to take his own life.

“I give you my condolences.”
