Motorists have been advised of overnight road closures on the A19 in County Durham for two weeks for resurfacing works to be carried out.

National Highways says motorists in the region will soon see better journeys on the A19 after the completion of work due to start on Sunday, August 18.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "Journeys on the A19 northbound between Murton and Ryhope will become smoother and safer once the work is complete.

"To keep drivers and the workforce safe while the work is carried out, the A19 northbound will be closed overnight between the A182 Cold Hesledon Interchange and A1018 Ryhope Spur Interchange.

"Closures will be in place six nights per week, over a period of around two weeks.

"Each closure will run from around 8pm until 6am the following morning, Sunday – Friday.

"The route will remain open on Saturday nights. There will be a 50mph speed limit for traffic running on a temporary surface during the day."

There will be no overnight closures during the Bank Holiday weekend between Friday 23 and Monday 26 August.

Drivers on the A19 northbound are advised to follow the signed diversion via the B1285 and B1404 to rejoin the A19 at the B1404 Seaton Lane northbound entry slip road.

All work is subject to the weather and may be rescheduled in poor conditions.
