AN ICONIC tea rooms in Northallerton is set to undergo maintenance on its roof, and a refresh of decoration inside.

Bettys Cafe & Tea Rooms, in Northallerton High Street, opened in 1971, but the building is Grade II listed and was built early mid-18th Century with 19th Century alterations.

The frontage features a rendered frontage with a Welsh slate roof, timber sash windows with a sill band, and stone coin stones.

The plans include a chimney stack/organic material removal and repointing works; repairs to main roof, including replacement of broken slates; cleaning and organic growth removal to roof hip and ridge tiles, including re-bedding works; decorative maintenance works to roof lanterns; external wall repairs and repointing; and external window repairs and redecoration, and cleaning.

Double glazed units to the lantern lights on the flat roof are to be replaced on a like for like basis.

Inside, proposed works include repairs and redecoration to plaster walls, timberwork and metal work; flooring repairs; fire door replacement, including decoration; securement of ceiling and wall lining paper and redecoration.

The paint is to be from Benjiman Moore Scuffex range, and the colour scheme is to be determined following discussions with the Bettys and Taylors aesthetics team.

According to a planning statement, "the building needs these works to prevent it from becoming dilapidated and to maintain the current operations.

Bettys, famed for its afternoon teas, is a major draw for Northallerton, which has recently been named among the best high streets in the UK.

The first Betty’s Café was opened by Swiss chocolatier and baker Frederick Belmont in Harrogate in 1919 and the first afternoon tea was served in 1927.
