Three people were arrested by Northumbria Police last night after there were dispersal orders put out over towns and cities in the North East.
The increased police presence last night was in response to riots across the region in recent days.
There had been rumours on social media that there would be a wave of demonstrations around the country but they did not materialise.
Northumbria Police arrested three people after drunk and disorderly offences and they remain in police custody.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "You may have noticed we had an increased presence in Newcastle and Sunderland today in response to potential protest activity taking place.
