A busy County Durham road was closed for hours causing significant traffic disruption after two vehicles crashed this afternoon. 

Emergency services were alerted to the collision on the A691 in Lanchester at the junction with Howden Bank shortly after noon on Wednesday (August 7).

The AA reported: "Road blocked, crash, queueing traffic.

"Road blocked and queueing traffic due to crash on A691 Consett Road both ways from the Stoney Heap turn off to A6076 Howden Bank."

 A Durham Police spokesperson said: "Police were called shortly before 12pm this afternoon (August 7), to reports of a two-vehicle collision on the A691, between Consett and Lanchester.

"No one is believed to have been injured in the collision. The road was closed while the vehicles were being recovered."
