A VILLAGE hall committee has applied to change agreed building materials relating to improvement works due to costs.

Well Village Institute, Church Street, Well, near Northallerton, has planning permission to demolish an existing kitchen and toilet to the rear of the original institute building; refurbishment of external building fabric; internal alterations to provide a new kitchen and toilet facilities; construction of a new rear extension to provide community space and accessible entrance; and external landscaping.

The committee seeks to change from a flat green roof to a hipped slate roof; removal of clerestory windows from the design; and to change from charred timber cladding with some stone to grey timber cladding.

The committee said in a planning statement: "Since being granted planning consent we have met a number of unforeseen obstacles which delayed the build and, by the time our builder was on site, the cost and availability of building materials have made completion of the project, as it stands, unachievable, for a small village charity."
