A man who went to the Sunderland riots with cocaine and heroin faces jail after admitting his part in the violence.

Bradley Makin, 21, is the fourth rioter to be convicted after playing a part in the appalling scenes in the city on Friday (August 2).

Appearing before South Tyneside Magistrates Court on Tuesday he pleaded guilty to violent disorder and possessing cocaine and heroin.

Makin, of Simonside Road, Springwell, Sunderland, was remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court on Friday (August 9).

The sentencings of three fellow rioters – Leanne Hodgson, 43, Josh Kellett, 29, and Andrew Smith, 41 – have also been moved forward from September 2 to Friday, Northumbria Police said.

It comes after a 27-year-old man pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary but denied violent disorder, a 48-year-old man pleaded not guilty to violent disorder, while a 31-year-old man did not indicate a plea during hearings before the same court on Monday (August 5). All three have been remanded in custody until their next court appearance.

Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Barr said: “Every community across Northumbria will have been affected in some way by the appalling scenes witnessed on Friday evening.

“I would like to reassure the public that a comprehensive investigation is well underway as we look to identify those responsible and ensure they are faced with the full force of the law.
