A North East address has been hit with a closure order following reports of drug dealing and violence.

Cleveland Police confirmed they received 18 reports relating to crime, nuisance and disorder at an address on Monkland Close in Middlesbrough since June 29.

They added a woman living at the property was reportedly involved in criminality and drugs supply.

Drug deals also allegedly took place through a window at the property, and there were also reports of a “strong smell” of cannabis coming from the address.

A drugs warrant was carried out at the address on July 20, and a three-month closure order was granted at the property on August 1.

Inspector Darren Birkett from Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This closure order rightly gives the residents in the area the peace they so deserve. People should be able to live without fear and should be able to go about their daily business without living with crime, violence and nuisance on their doorsteps.

“Closure orders are another useful tool which we can use to help stop those who think it’s acceptable to cause misery for others and we will continue to listen to our communities and utilise these orders, wherever necessary.”

Councillor Janet Thompson, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive member for Community Safety, said: “There is no place in our communities for drug dealing and antisocial behaviour and we will use all the means at our disposal to stamp them out on behalf of law-abiding residents.

“This house closure is a great example of that approach, and we will continue to work hand in hand with Cleveland Police and other partners to drive these people out of decent neighbourhoods blighted by their blatant criminality.”
