Police have confirmed that eight people have been arrested following disorder in one North East town last night that saw a vehicle set on fire as dozens of officers took to the streets.

Hartlepool was overcome and unrecognisable last night (July 31) has hundreds took to the streets to protest days after a stabbing in Southport claimed the lives of three young girls.

A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with the murders of Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, 10 counts of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article following the incident on Monday (July 29).

Pictures from the scene last night showed protestors on Murray Street clashing with police who pushed back in an effort to remain in control.

Rocks were thrown at officers who marched in riot gear, and a police vehicle was later seen alight in the early hours of the morning.

It has now been confirmed that the disorder has come to a close and roads are re-opened - but police will remain in the area.

A Cleveland Police statement reads: "The disorder in Hartlepool has now been ended and all roads are open.

"Eight arrests were made during the evening relating to public order offences.

"A full criminal investigation is under way and we expect further arrests to be made in the coming days.

"We understand that these events will have been hugely concerning to our communities and we want to reassure people that the actions of those involved will be dealt with to bring those responsible to justice.
