A popular North East pub has reopened after finding a new owner.

The Victoria Gardens, located in Hendon, Sunderland, welcomed its patrons back as it reopened on July 14.

Chris Paterson, 36, from Roker, said he noticed the pub was listed on Star Pubs and jumped at the opportunity to take over the venue.

He said the process had been “a bit of a whirlwind” but was glad to be open and welcoming new and old customers.

Mr Paterson said: “Since we opened, the biggest response we’ve had from locals, who’ve all been massively supportive, is how clean it is, how much friendlier it feels.

“People were worried that it was going to fully close, I think there’s a lot of relief locally that it’s open.

“I’m very much here to stay. Lots planned and lots of potential I’m trying to untap.

“[You] can expect a nice friendly face from myself and Tammy, and somewhere you can come in, feel relaxed, have a beer, glass of wine, coffee, and not feel rushed.

“I want it to be a little bit of an escape from the bustle of day-to-day.”

He added the only let down on opening day was England’s match final defeat against Spain in the Euros.

The venue is being headed by Mr Paterson and manager Tammy Pedrick.

He added there are plans to modernise the bar and building – and also bring a brunch menu and barista coffee to the venue.

He said customers can expect homemade pies on Fridays, and “proper” smash burgers at the venue, and these will use fresh ingredients.

Mr Paterson added he is planning to bring in a new street food venue every week to offer his patrons variety.
