Three people have been arrested and thousands of pounds have been seized after police attended reports of dangerous driving.

Northumbria Police confirmed they seized thousands in ‘suspected drug cash’ after responding to reports of electric motorbikes being ‘ridden dangerously’ on Chillingham Road in Newcastle at 1am today (July 31).

They said one of the riders rode directly at officers, while the suspects also allegedly attempted to kick vehicle wing mirrors.

Police said they began to monitor the suspects using local authority security cameras in an attempt to stop them.

They confirmed they arrested two 17-year-old males, and one 16-year-old male.

A 17-year-old male was seen on an electric motorbike on Newgate Street, with officers seizing the bike and arresting him on suspicion of disorderly conduct.

Two other males, aged 17 and 16, were located at 2am – following a search, the 17-year-old was found to be in possession of approximately £4,000 in cash, a quantity of cannabis and a suspected burner phone believed to be used for drug deals.

Chief Inspector Dean Hood, of Northumbria Police, said: “This was excellent work from our officers who were determined to track down those who were suspected of riding these motorbikes in a dangerous manner.

“Thanks to co-ordinated efforts and considered tactics, a short time later we were able to get three people in handcuffs, seize three bikes and recover drugs and thousands of pounds in suspected drug money.

“I hope this sends a clear message to offenders that we will not tolerate vehicle-related anti-social behaviour and drug dealing in our communities and we’ll continue to do our utmost to identify those responsible and get them into custody.

“No-one should have to experience this kind of criminality, regardless as to if it’s in the daytime or at night, and we remain committed to chasing down anyone identify as being involved.”

“I’d remind members of the public that our Force-wide initiative Operation Capio continues to crackdown on motorcycle criminality, responding to the concerns of residents and businesses.

“If you have any information on this issue please share it with us so that we can take the appropriate action.

“Anti-social riders should be under no illusions and expect to be arrested and also have their vehicles seized and potentially crushed.”

Both males were arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of drugs and had their bikes seized.

All three males remain in police custody.

A police spokesperson said: “Anyone with information regarding bike disorder can get in touch by sending Northumbria Police a direct message on social media or using the live chat function on the Force’s website.

“For those who do not have access to either, please call 101.”
