A musician from Durham hopes her debut at The Glasshouse in Gateshead will be the "first of many" at The Proms, after performing at the BBC event this weekend.

The weekend-long musical celebration featured local talents from the North East, orchestrated by the BBC as part of their Proms season.

It started on July 26, with maestro Dinis Sousa leading the Royal Northern Sinfonia, performing works including the renowned Sibelius' Violin Concerto.

Durham-based Abbie Finn performed on the Concourse Stage last Saturday evening as part of the BBC's Proms weekend in Gateshead.

She said: "It's the first time I’m performing in the proms and I hope it’s the first of many.

"I’m pleased to be part of it and to be able to share my music."

Her musical work heavily influenced by the North East, with her piece 'Into the Dene', penned as a tribute to Jesmond Dene where she was married in 2023.

Long-standing members of the Royal Northern Sinfonia Chorus, Liz and Malcolm have a 100-mile round trip for every rehearsal.

Liz said: "It’s such a wonderful experience making music to such a high level.

"It’s special because you’re with like-minded people, wanting to achieve the highest standard."

Malcolm, who has spent 16 years in the group, said: "I’ve sung all my life, and in my experience, the chorus compares to the very best choirs.

"Opportunities like the Proms don’t come around all the time."

The band started "being as joyful as possible" on the streets during the pandemic. It was "in a time where it didn't feel like there was much of that going around," the band said.
