A County Durham fish and chip shop has been hit with a one-star food hygiene rating after inspectors said 'major improvement' was needed.
Broom Chippy and Fish Bar on Broom Road in Ferryhill was awarded a very low rating by the Food Standards Agency in an inspection on June 19.
The inspectors found dirty surfaces, dirty wiping cloths, and inadequate disinfectant being used to clean the sides.
One particular issue was the temperature of the fridge which was being used to store cheese and ham.
The report reads: "The temperature of the pizza topping fridge top and the adjacent tall fridge was too high, the temperature of cheese and ham were around 17C.
"This food is likely to support the growth of food poisoning bacteria or the formation of toxins and must not be stored above 8C.
"You must either adjust or service the refrigerator."
The risk of food contamination was being exacerbated by the dirty wiping cloths in use in the kitchen.
The report added: "Dirty wiping cloths were being used for cleaning surfaces and equipment, presenting a risk of contamination.
"Cloths must be kept clean, disinfected and replaced regularly (although it is more hygienic to use disposable cloths).
"It is important that separate cloths are used for the cleaning of raw and ready-to-eat food equipment to prevent contamination."
The storerooms of the fish and chip shop had an "accumulation" of waste in them from empty potato bags and cardboard boxes.
The inspector also took issue with the condition of the floors and the toilets at the chippy.

The report reads: "The floor coverings throughout the premises were dirty, especially at floor/wall junctions and under equipment.
"Thoroughly clean the floor and maintain in a clean condition.
"There was some damp/mould growth to the walls in the staff toilet. Repair and redecorate the wall covering so the compartment is in good condition so that it can be easily cleaned."
