A worker has been seriously injured after cutting his arm on glass from a window as he attempted to put out a fire, caused by a blow torch.

The incident happened at about 1.50pm today (Friday, July 26) at a property on Kirkby Lane in Kirkby, near Stokesley - where emergency services were called following reports of a fire at the house.

After arriving on the scene, firefighters, police and paramedics looked for casualties, with the fire reportedly put out by neighbours before the arrival of fire crews.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Northallerton and an appliance from Cleveland Fire Service were called to a property after reports of a fire inside a one-storey house.

"On arrival at the property, the fire which had been caused by a blow torch on a window frame, had been extinguished by neighbours.

"A male contractor was taken to hospital with a serious cut to his arm caused by breaking the window whilst attempting to extinguish the fire.

"The crews proceeded to remove the window frame using the reciprocal saw and small tools so they could check the wall cavity and ensure the fire had not spread."
