Stockton Borough Council is to recognise those with experience of 'care' as a protected characteristic.

The new measures which the Council say acknowledge the potential for discrimination, stigma, and prejudice among care-givers were approved at a full Council meeting on July 24.

Care leavers in Stockton will also get support from the Council, in the form of the council acting as a corporate rent guarantor for private rental access, as part of a new 12-month pilot scheme.

The move aims to aid the transition into adulthood for local young people and overcome barriers, such as lack of rental history or financial instability.

Part of this enhanced offer from Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council includes mentoring and local employment opportunities.

Councillor Lisa Evans, the council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: "Leaving home can be challenging for anyone but it can be particularly daunting for young people in care, so it is vitally important that we continue to support them as they transition into adulthood.

"By making sure they have access to affordable housing, employment and training opportunities, and personalised expert advice, we will offer a helping hand to ensure they're equipped to live independently and build a stable future in the long-term."

Reece, 20, who is care experienced, said "I would say to anyone - if you believe in yourself anything is possible."

Personalised Advisors will administer the support, in partnership with the Council's Employment and Training Hub, Learning and Development Team and Housing teams.
