A NORTH East primary school has earned national recognition for its dedication to sports and physical activity.

Skerne Park Academy, in Darlington, has been awarded a Gold Schools Games Mark in recognition of its outstanding sports provision.

The award is part of a government-led scheme which identifies UK schools that demonstrate outstanding commitment to developing strong sporting communities.

Bryony Grey and Kelly Jackson, Skerne Park Academy’s PE Leads, spearheaded the school’s efforts to qualify for the honour.

Bryony said: “We do lots of sporting events at Skerne Park Academy, including in-school events and taking part in inter-school competitions, as well as organising after-school clubs, which is what earned us this award.

“It’s very important to us to get the children involved in lots of physical activity at school and make sure it’s inclusive and accessible to everyone. Sport is so important – it gets children involved socially, it’s good for them to be active, and it’s just fun!”

This accolade means that Skerne Park Academy, which is part of the Advance Learning Partnership, has received a gold award three years in a row.

Head teacher, Clair Gooding, added: “We are overjoyed that Skerne Park Academy has been recognised three years in a row for its sporting vision. Three gold wins means that next year we can apply for the Platinum award, which would be fantastic.

“It’s a testament to the dedication of our staff, the enthusiasm of the children, and the wonderful support we receive from families in our community.”
