Police are carrying out searches after suspected human remains were found on Wednesday (July 24) morning.
Northumbria Police confirmed officers were called to the River Wear in South Hylton, Sunderland after the suspected remains were discovered.
Officers have been seen carrying out searches in the area with the marine unit reportedly also at the scene.
Police are yet to confirm whether the remains are human, as suspected.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At around 10.05am today (Wednesday), we received a report of suspected human remains having been discovered on the riverbank near Wear Street in South Hylton.
“Emergency services are currently in attendance at the scene to carry out enquiries.”
