A teenage motorcyclist whose head crashed into a pole after he came off his bike has thanked passersby who stopped to help him.

Rob Young was heading out of Newton Aycliffe on Sunday (July 21) at about 1pm when he came off his motorbike on Middridge Road at Rushyford.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene and the 18-year-old IT technician was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Rob, from Newton Aycliffe, has now thanked passersby who stopped to help him after he lost control of his bike, saying: “I can’t thank them enough.

“They got me help when I needed it.

“The way the world’s been going recently it nice to know there’s still some good out there – it restores your faith in humanity a bit.

“One of them was a nurse and once I had come around there was quite a few people surrounding me making sure I am okay.

“My mam had no way of getting there on her own so one of the passersby drove all the way home to bring her there.”

Rob, who has only been riding for a month but completed his CBT test in February, says he lost control of the bike when he went over oil and sand in the road.

He suffered a bruised spinal column, impacted nerve in his knee and whiplash.

He said: “It remember it all to be honest.

“I was riding along, going at about 35mph and there was what looked to be like oil and sand on the road and I lost control.

“I regained control and next thing I know I am going straight towards the curb. I just slammed the breaks and then I end up heading into the temporary traffic sign and then I slid off and my head hits the pole.

The teenager says he’ll get back on his bike once he’s recovered, but will avoid the stretch of road where the accident happened.
