One person was hospitalised over the weekend after they were hit by a bus in Bishop Auckland town centre.

Emergency services were called to Newgate Street just after 6.30pm on Saturday (July 20) following the crash which disrupted public transport.

Police have now confirmed that a person was hit by a bus.

A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: "Police were called shortly after 6.30pm on Saturday (July 20) to an incident in which a bus collided with a pedestrian on Newgate Street, in Bishop Auckland.

"Paramedics also attended the scene and took the pedestrian to hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic collision today (20 July) on Newgate Street in Bishop Auckland shortly after 6:30pm.

"We dispatched one ambulance crew, and one clinical team leader and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"One patient was taken to James Cook University Hospital."

The Great North Air Ambulance (GNAAS) were also called to the scene but the injured person was taken to hospital by road.

A GNAAS spokesperson said: "Our critical care team was activated at 6.39pm to reports of a road traffic collision in Bishop Auckland.

"We had two doctors and a paramedic on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 6.57pm.

"Our team worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) to assess and treat a patient.

"The patient was then taken to hospital by the NEAS road crew."
