A County Durham road was closed for two hours on Monday (July 23) after a two-car crash caused an oil spill on the stretch of road. 

Emergency services were called to the A6076 Shield Row Bank at Kip Hill in Stanley at about 8am, following reports of a crash. 

After arriving on the scene, police, fire service and paramedics blocked off the A6076 both ways and diverted traffic down Pelaw Avenue.

The stretch of road is now open to drivers, with Durham Police confirming details of the incident, including the fact that no one was seriously injured in the crash.

A spokesperson for the police force said: "Police were called shortly before 8.05am today to a two-vehicle collision on Shield Row Bank in Stanley.

"Nobody is believed to have been seriously injured in the incident.

"The road was closed for cleaning due to an oil spill but has since reopened."

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident, but left the scene 45 minutes after arriving, due to leaving the incident with police.

A spokesperson for the fire service added: “We were called at 8.03am today (July 22) to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on Kip Hill, County Durham.

“One fire engine from High Handenhold Fire Station attended the incident and made the vehicle safe before leaving the scene at 8.42am.”
