Two Darlington dogs have been saved by other canines' blood donations, prompting calls for more pet blood donors across the region.
Two Cocker Spaniel brothers, Banter and Reggie, needed life-saving transfusions for different reasons in recent years.
Fortunately, other dogs generously donated blood, saving both Banter and Reggie's lives.
Banter was critically ill in May 2021 after ingesting a sock, resulting in a painful intestinal blockage.
After complications arose from surgery at Westway Vets in Newcastle, including stomach inflammation and low protein levels, Banter required a blood transfusion.
After a challenging nine days in intensive care, Banter returned home, fully recovered.
Meanwhile, in January 2024, Reggie was struck by severe anaemia, dangerously reducing his red blood cell count.
Reggie urgently needed a blood transfusion, necessitated by his automatically weak immunity, ensuring the effectiveness of his treatments.
Following an eight-day hospital stint, Reggie finally stabilised and joyfully reunited with Banter and their family.

Reggie's condition is continually monitored, but he is steadily recovering.
Banter and Reggie's owner, Barney said: "The important service Pet Blood Bank provides has helped to save the lives of both of our dogs, and for that, we will always be grateful."
Whether from illness or unfortunate accidents like Banter's, dogs often require emergency interventions, with donated blood potentially making the life or death difference.
Pet Blood Bank, has encouraged owners of dogs aged between one to eight years, weighing over 25kg, and exhibiting optimal health and friendliness towards new people, to register their pets as blood donors.
