Torrential rain sweeping through the region has caused delays on roads and a friendly football game to be cancelled.

Heavy rain has battered the region early on Tuesday evening and the match between Newton Aycliffe and Northallerton at Moore Lane is off.

Writing on social media a spokesperson for Northallerton Football Club said: “We are sorry to announce that torrential rain in the Newton Aycliffe area has caused tonight's friendly at Moore Lane to be called off.

“We'll update you if a rearranged date is agreed.”

Newton Aycliffe Football Club also posted a message on the club website.

It said: “Unfortunately tonight's planned fixture against Northallerton Town has been postponed

“A new date will be released once confirmed.”

A yellow weather warning - which has been issued from 8am until 8pm on Tuesday - means that spray and flooding on roads could make journey times longer, with there even being a small chance that a few properties could be temporarily flooded.

Areas where the warning has been issued include Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside, and Sunderland.
