New parking restrictions at Hermiston Retail Park in Consett have prompted anger from local residents after they were spotted on Saturday.

The restrictions enforce a three-hour maximum stay during regular hours, a ten-minute limit outside of these hours, and a 'no return within two hours' rule.

In response to these changes, Hermiston regulars have taken to social media, voicing their grievances and highlighting potential problems for everyday shoppers.

Lennie Curry said: "If you go several times in a day (cause I always forget things!) then the Automatic Number Plate Recognition gets confused and charges you!

"What a sham. I'll try very hard not to use this retail park again. Bad move for Consett once more."

Members of the 24/7 gym at the retail park will now be required to register their vehicles to receive free parking outside normal operating hours.

Local shopper Lesley Ann Little expressed hope that "the car reg tablet works in the gym."

Tammy Mersh said: "No return within 2 hours? What if you forget something?"

Many see these measures as hindrances to retail activity in the area including Graham Stuart who said: "It's not like the car park is full after 10pm. The odd driver maybe taking a break on a journey.

"Rip off Britain."

Gordon Seymour said: "Out of town shopping has destroyed the high street, now that they have destroyed that, the aim is to fine you for shopping after decimating town centres.

"Unbelievable stupidity."

And Richard Berry said: "Great one for trades using B&Q, can see a few unjustified tickets coming.

"More nails in the coffin for retail, well done."
