A person has been hit by a train between Newcastle and Darlington.
Emergency services were called to the trainline before 12.40pm on Tuesday following the incident, which has since sparked delays across the region.
All lines between Newcastle and Darlington stations are closed while 999 crews carry out their work, with LNER, Cross Country, Lumo, and TransPennine Express routes all being affected.
Disruption is expected along the line until 4:30pm, according to National Rail.
It is understood Ricknall lane in Newton Aycliffe, where the line runs under the road, has been closed for some time.
It said: "A person has been hit by a train between Newcastle and Darlington. Whilst the emergency services carry out their work, all lines between these stations are closed.
"Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised."
