The Flying Scotsman is set to make a triumphant return to a County Durham museum this week - here's all the details.

Locomotion in Shildon is ready and waiting to welcome back arguably the world's most famous steam train on July 19 for its summer residency at the museum until September 1.

Visitors can already book Flying Scotsman steam rides, exclusive cab rides, the chance to ride in a brake van hauled by the world-famous locomotive and behind-the-scenes tours of the support coach.

Sarah Price, Head of Locomotion, said: “Locomotion is now bigger and better than ever, so now is the perfect time for a summer-long celebration!

“Whether you want to take a once-in-a-lifetime ride on Flying Scotsman, view our incredible collection or just treat the family to a fabulous day out at the North East’s best-kept secret, Locomotion is the place to be this summer.”

The last time the Scotsman resided at Locomotion in December, it was just the ticket for nearly 4,000 visitors who clamoured to catch a glimpse of the historic train which dates back to the 1860s.

Pictures showed train and rail enthusiasts in their element, snapping pictures inside the famous carriage.

Sponsoring the event is Hornby - who will display a special model railway layout at the museum during the festival, running the steam ‘Flying Scotsman’ model locomotive.
