A probe is underway after a prisoner died at a Durham jail.
Forty-eight-year-old Richard While died at HMP Durham on July 4, the prison service confirmed.
The circumstances of his death at not yet known and a Prison and Probation Ombudsman investigation will now take place.
A prison service spokesperson said: “Richard While died on July 4 at HMP Durham. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”
It is the second death in two days at the city-centre prison after child rapist Brian Jordan died a day earlier, just days after being sentenced.
