Police have warned residents to keep their windows and doors closed as they continue to tackle a large blaze on a North East industrial estate.

Multiple emergency services remain at Addison Industrial Estate in Ryton, Gateshead today (July 15) following a large blaze that began in the late hours of yesterday evening.

Ten fire engines from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have been brought in to fight the flames which is understood to be still smoldering.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 11.20pm yesterday (Sunday) we received a report of a fire on Addison Industrial Estate, Ryton.

“Emergency services remain at the scene as fire crews tackle the blaze.

“Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and residents are asked to keep windows and doors closed.”

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson added: “We can confirm that late on Sunday evening (14th July) multiple appliances were dispatched to a fire on an industrial estate in Gateshead.

“The emergency call was received at 10.56 pm and at the height of the fire saw seven crews in attendance from stations across Tyne and Wear, including an aerial ladder platform.

“Firefighters had continued to tackle the blaze throughout the night with four crews remaining in attendance this morning to dampen down the site.

“There is no known cause of the fire but a joint investigation between TWFRS and Northumbria Police is currently underway.”
