A child rapist whose offences spanned nearly 50 years died in prison from an industrial disease caused by asbestos.

Donald Moore, from Redcar, was locked up in 2006 after a long history of sexual abuse in children, women and men, with 53 offences including a sex attack on a man during a robbery.

The court heard Moore had a long record of sexual offences against men and women, starting when he was only 17 years old in 1958.

He died from disseminated malignant mesothelioma in July 2023, and a new report from the prisons' ombudsman has been released, revealing more details about his death.

The dangerous paedophile was banged up in HMP Wymott, near Leyland, in Lancashire.

When he was sent down, former scaffolder Moore was given an indeterminate sentence for public protection, meaning to secure his release, doctors would have to prove he had lost his sexual urges.

In 2005, a 15-year-old girl reported a catalogue of sexual offences at Moore's hands, and the dad-of-four pleaded guilty to a litany of charges, which effectively sent him to prison for the rest of his life.

Looking into his death, an investigator from the Prison and Probation Ombudsman concluded that his care in prison was "variable".

The PPO wrote: "The clinical reviewer concluded that the clinical care Mr Moore received at HMP Wymott was variable.

"Some areas of Mr Moore’s care were equivalent to what he could have expected to receive in the community.

"However, she found some areas of learning for the healthcare team relating to the limited monitoring of Mr Moore’s condition and adherence to NICE guidance for fall risk assessments."
