A County Durham event has been cancelled after the venue that it was set to be staged ended up underwater.

After heavy rainfall on Saturday (July 13), several parts of the region were left flooded, especially low-lying land and farmland.

The Met Office said that the amount of rain that fell could cause "disruption to many, transport issues, and risk of flooding for a select few".

Already this weekend, the Steam and Vintage Fair in Chester-le-Street was cancelled, due to the wet weather and the condition of the land - while trains have been affected between Middlesbrough and Whitby, due to water on the line.

The most recent victim of the wet weather is the Durham County Canine Association, which was scheduled to take place at Tanfield Lane Farm, Tanfield Lea, Stanley.

In a statement online on Sunday (July 14) morning, the organiser of the event, said: "The Durham County Canine Association is abandoned - please do not come.

"I’m in tears as I write this as it’s not the post I wanted to be writing, but we just can’t hold a show underwater. Please share - further details to follow."

The cancellation of the event sparked disappointment but understanding from those that were planning to attend.

In a video shared along with the statement, a person can be seen standing in the middle of a deep puddle, showing the extent of the flooding on the farmland where the event would have been staged.
