A vintage transport group that houses 30 rare buses and other vehicles have been told they must vacate the premises they have called home for the last 14 years.

The Tyneside Heritage Vehicles collective, who have been operating out of a unit in Felling, Gateshead, have been told that they have two more weeks before they must be off the site.

The group work to restore vintage buses from the region which are then showcased at local events.

Despite some of their vehicles dating back to the 1970s, the lease on the building has come to an end, and hasn't been renewed by the owners, BizSpace.

Over the next two weeks, the group say they will have to move the remainder of the vehicles and equipment off the site - but have "too many" items to move it quickly.

In a post uploaded to social media, the group said that they have managed to move some buses to new owners - but haven't managed to find a new venue, so have had to sell, scrap or bin items.

The most recent post from Tyneside Heritage Vehicles, which is from July 6, reads: "We have overstepped our departure date, we simply didn't have enough time to clear the building

"We now have a couple more weeks though to finish up and move out.

"Such a waste after all these years but we're making good progress now and the building should finally be cleared within weeks.

"The waste skips and the scrap skips arrived, been filled, emptied and dropped back off for the next round.

"More buses have left for new homes as has some of our equipment."

The Northern Echo reached out to BizSpace but hasn't had a response from the company.

However, in a previous statement circulated across regional media, a spokesperson for BizSpace, said: "We can confirm that we will not be renewing Tyneside Heritage Vehicles’ lease at our Felling Warehouse in Gateshead when the contractual term expires.

"This is to fit with our strategic plans for the site which we are currently assessing."
