Plans to create more parking bays on land by Hopelands, Heighington, have been approved by Darlington Borough Council.

The planning application submitted by Heighington Parish Council received consent on Tuesday for the addition of eight parking spaces, along with connected footpaths at Hopelands and Hopelands Cottages.

The approved development involves the transformation of two grass verge sections close to the current parking areas.

Positioned in front of numerous bungalows and homes, the added spaces aim to enhance parking availability and decrease road obstruction.

Emphasis on local highway safety was highlighted, with the Highways Engineer backing the scheme.

According to the report, the new parking provision strives to achieve a more secure and efficient use of the local roadways.

It was suggested that the extra spaces would not drastically impact the surrounding living environment, for those already resident on the street.

The council received one objection, citing concerns about potential traffic speed increases and whether the plan would effectively tackle the neighbourhood's parking issues.

It was also suggested that the proposal include charging points for electric vehicles, however, the report indicated that the number of provisions didn't reach the required quota for such an addition.

The planning permission is valid for three years from the date of permission.
