Two people were taken to hospital and a man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs after a crash involving four cars on the A19.

Emergency services were called to the A-road on Tuesday (July 9) at about 1pm, following reports of a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound carriageway near Mandale Interchange. 

The collision involved four vehicles; a grey Mercedes, a red Kia, a Ford Transit Tipper and an Audi A4.

Police believe a fifth vehicle may have made off from the scene.

A woman and an 11-year-old girl travelling in the Mercedes were taken to hospital as a precaution.

A 38-year-old man, driving the Ford Transit Tipper, was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs.

Police are now appealing for more information, especially about the fifth car that is believed to have left the scene.
