As England took on Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter final in Germany, Tom Burgess joined fans watching on the big screen in Darlington's Woollen Mill pub.

They groaned, they cheered, they spilled their beers.

England fans ran through the whole gamut of emotions as Gareth Southgate's men tackled Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-final in Dusseldorf.

Those fans who were unable to go to Germany to cheer on the Three Lions in person, piled into fan parks, crammed into pubs or stayed at home to watch as the nation held their breath.

One of the biggest gatherings in the North East was at the Times Square’s fanzone in Newcastle, where - despite an initial downpour - hundreds of supporters joined together in cheering on England.

Meanwhile, it was standing room only in The Woollen Mill, in Darlington, as drinkers jostled for position and craned their necks for the best view of one of the screens showing the big match.

The first half was a tense affair with drinks being sipped and the slow build of tension as neither side capitalised on early chances.

The second half kicked off with some better play from the England lads but not quite enough to lift the subdued atmosphere.

Switzerland's Breel Embolo burying a searching ball across the box for Switzerland was the lowest moment of the night with groans filling the room. Could it be heartache for England?

Kicking off after going behind there suddenly seemed to be an energy to England's play and within minutes Bukayo Saka produced a moment of magic, equalising with ten minutes to go.

Tension began to build again through a lacklustre extra time with some fans dreading the thought of a penalty shoot-out.

One commented: "How many times has England gone out in a penalty shootout.?"

That was not to be the case tonight. Ice man Cole Palmer eased fears by blasting in from the spot and England gained momentum with an early save from North East-born Jordan Pickford.

After a couple more successful penalties the mood began to change to jubilation and a few fans even started a rendition of "It's Coming Home".

Trent Alexander Arnold capped off a set of spectacular penalties for England making it five out of five.

England are now through to the semi-finals to face the Netherlands - and Three Lions fans will have the chance to do it all again. Get ready for another emotional rollercoaster!
