Police investigating a serious crash reopened a County Durham road several hours after a collision prompted the attendance of an air ambulance. 

Emergency service, including the Great North Air Ambulance, were called to the scene of a collision on the Middridge Road, near Woodham Village, Newton Aycliffe, at noon on Friday (July 5).

The crash was reported to have taken place on Middridge Road, between Woodham Golf Course and Rushyford roundabout.

The North East Ambulance Service reported that one person had been taken to hospital. Further details of the incident have yet to be confirmed. 

A Durham Police spokesperson said at the time: "Officers are currently dealing with a serious collision in the Rushyford area.

"Middridge Road between Woodham Golf Course and Rushyford roundabout is currently closed.

"The A689 between Leasingthorpe roundabout and Rushyford roundabout is also currently closed.

"The area is likely to remain closed for some time, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

A NEAS spokesperson said: “We received a call at 12pm this afternoon (Friday 5 July) to reports of a road traffic incident on the Rushyford roundabout.

"We dispatched four ambulance crews, a clinical team leader, a specialist paramedic, a crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

"One patient was taken by road to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”

Police reopened the road after several hours. 

A Durham Police spokesperson said: "The road has now been re-opened. Thank you for your patience whilst we have dealt with this incident."
